Introduction
I am a B.Tech in Civil Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur and a
Ph.D
in
Environmental Planning and Management with specialisation in water resource management from
Centre
for Environmental Planning and Technology University, Ahmedabad.
I have experience of over three
decades in theoretical and practical community development work, with specialisation in
Adivasi
development and natural resource management and have the following skills and work profile -

in the magazine Down To Earth as a special report and also in the State of the Environment
Report entitled - “Dying Wisdom”.
- 1995. A critical evaluation study of the Joint Forest Management experiment conducted by the
Madhya Pradesh Forest Department in Harda Forest Division for Oxfam India Trust. Findings
published in the form of a report entitled - “Bungle in the Jungle” and also as a paper in
the
magazine Down To Earth.

Voluntary Social Work
More than my research work I have given greater importance to my work as a voluntary social
activist
among the Bhil Adivasi indigenous people in western Madhya Pradesh State in India. The
organisation
I helped in setting up for carrying out development work in western Madhya Pradesh, Dhas Gramin
Vikas Kendra, has been awarded the prestigious Times of
India –
J P Morgan Social Impact Award 2011 in the category of advocacy and empowerment.
My alma mater Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur has honoured me with the Distinguished
Alumnus Award in 2019. I have now set up another organisation Mahila
Jagat Lihaaz Samiti to pursue gender equity and
ecological sustainability.
The
details of this work are as follows –
- 2016 - : Resumed reproductive health and rights work with poor Adivasi and Dalit women in slums
in
cities and in villages and work on survival edge technology consisting of sustainable
agriculture,
natural resource conservation and renewable energy through the organisation Mahila Jagat Lihaaz
Samiti.
- 2011- : Founded in Delhi, along with other reputed social workers, the organisation, Development
and
Justice Initiative, for nationwide work for the benefit of the underprivileged sections of
society
and have been contributing to its activities and governance.
- 2008 - : Began systematic work that is continuing on ameliorating the adverse conditions under
which
the migrant tribal workers from Madhya Pradesh work in Gujarat as a new programme of action of
the
Khedut Mazdoor Chetna Sangath in association with the organisation Centre for Labour Research
and
Action of which I am a founding member.
- 2001 - : Began work that is continuing with the urban slum population of Indore city for their
right
to housing and basic civic amenities in collaboration with the NGO Deenbandhu Samajik Sansthan.
Contributed in the formulation of an alternative urban plan that addressed the needs of the poor
and
deprived sections of the city.
- 2000 - : Began work on the rejuvenation of traditional Bhil adivasi indigenous culture which has
at
present evolved into the mass organisation Adivasi Riti Badhao Tola.
- 1996 - : Began work on Bhil adivasi women’s reproductive health and rights which has evolved at
present into the organisation Kansari Nu Vadavno.
- 1994 - : Started work on the conservation of indigenous land races of crops and agricultural
practices which is continuing under the organisation Kisani Samvardhan Kendra.
- 1987 - : Development work started in primary education, community forest management and
watershed development under the aegis of the NGO Dhas Gramin Vikas Kendra.
- 1987 - : Formed the first ever Trade Union of Bhil adivasis which is continuing its rights work
through direct action and advocacy - Khedut Mazdoor Chetna Sangath.
- 1985-94 : Did mass organisation work with the oustees of the Sardar Sarovar Dam being built on
the
Narmada river which later evolved into the Narmada Bachao Andolan.
- 1985 - : Began mass organisation, legal and policy advocacy work with Bhil adivasis for their
right
to a sustainable livelihood and to equal citizenship in Alirajpur district of Madhya Pradesh
which
is still continuing and has spread to the whole of western Madhya Pradesh involving such
organisations as Khedut Mazdoor Chetna Sangath, Adivasi Morcha Sangathan, Adivasi Shakti
Sangathan
and Kansari nu Vadavnu.
- 1985 : Low cost building construction work with Social Work Research Centre in Tilonia, Ajmer,
Rajasthan.
- 1983–85: Education work among Santhal adivasis in Birbhum district of West Bengal.
- 1981–83 : Science education work among adivasi children in Kharagpur, West Bengal.
Legal Expertise
During these two and a half decades of work for the environmental sustainability and human
rights of
the Bhil Adivasis I have fought cases right from the lowest courts to the High Courts and the
Supreme Court and have assisted the lawyers with my own legal acumen.
Thus, even though I do not have any formal legal degree, I nevertheless have considerable
experience
and expertise in legal and para-legal training and human rights litigation also.
